The Longest Wiener Contest^TM also sponsors DOGS FOR VETS^TM, a grass-roots initiative connecting animal rescue groups with veterans' groups. 

The purpose is to not only rescue animals from shelters and give them forever homes, but also to select, house, and train those dogs (and other therapy animals) who are eligible to become "therapy dogs."  Therapy dogs and therapy animals help humans by participating in Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT) programs. 

For example, here is how this innovative process works:

Step 1:  A potential therapy dog (or other animal) is rescued from a shelter.

Step 2:  A disabled veteran can be employed to train this dog, in conjunction with non-profit groups including but not limited to Canine Assistants. Contact them by clicking the link or find them at the following web site:

Step 3:  The rescued, trained, and loved dogs can be placed in a program to assist another disabled veteran, or a homebound person, or the elderly, or residents in a nursing home.  The possibilities to concurrently save animals and help humans are endless.
